IRS admits error. The IRS has admitted it goofed on tens of thousands of requests for filing extensions of 2005 returns. Some IRS staffers stamped the wrong date on the forms, which then were improperly denied because they appeared not to have met the April 17 deadline. The error affected taxpayers in 15 western states, including several large requests made in bulk by professional tax preparers. The IRS expected to mail out letters to taxpayers in July rectifying the situation. If you haven’t received a letter yet, call the IRS’s toll-free hotline: (800) 827-1040.
