Q. I recently asked an applicant whether she used illegal drugs. She told me she understood that employers were not allowed to ask such questions. Is this legal?

A. Although the ADA limits an employer’s ability to ask about medical conditions or disabilities during a job interview, the use of illegal drugs falls outside the act’s protections. Therefore, any inquiry about illegal drug use is certainly legal.
