The EEOC recently filed a lawsuit against the Champion National Security Firm in Richardson, alleging the Texas company did not hire a Sikh who refused to shave his beard and remove his turban.

The EEOC is seeking punitive damages, back pay and compensation for pain and suffering caused to Sukhdev Singh Brar, a security officer in the Dallas area.

Brar alleges he applied for a job at the security firm in October of 2005. During a job interview, Champion National told Brar he would be hired if he agreed to shave and take off his turban while on duty. Brar claims that even after he explained that cutting his hair and removing his turban was against his religion, the company told him it would not change its policy.

The EEOC said it filed the suit only after unsuccessfully trying to resolve the case with Champion National.
