If you have one employee who does all your company's purchasing, look for hints that he or she is skimming off the top or receiving kickbacks from vendors. Some clues, according to the Journal of Accountancy, are that he or she: doesn't take time off, experiences financial problems, displays a lifestyle beyond his or her income, maintains a close relationship with vendors, makes excessive purchases from one vendor and makes multiple purchases over a short period. Advice: Separate duties—such as vendor approval, purchase approval and payment—among employees, and have your CPA examine key risk areas like purchasing.
