Companies spend millions on complex employee-retention strategies, but the best retention strategy is totally free, said Patrick Lencioni, author of The Three Signs of a Miserable Job. “The first requirement for a manager is to take a genuine interest in his employees” as people, said Lencioni. “Everyone has a fundamental need to be known in their work …. When you feel anonymous at work, there’s no way you can be fulfilled.”

It’s also important, he said, to reinforce every employee’s role and provide goals and feedback. “There’s something fundamentally demoralizing about not being able to tell how well you’re doing in a job…. We’ve got to remind people all the time why their jobs matter.”
