Less than half of the hourly employees who returned to work following an 87-day strike at American Axle & Manufacturing will have jobs in a year, the company announced.

The company’s latest contract with the United Auto Workers (UAW) union cut 2,000 of the 3,560 jobs now held by UAW members in Michigan and New York, along with an unspecified number of salaried positions.

The company also will cut its hourly labor rate, including wages and benefits, by half. Workers will earn an all-inclusive rate of $30 to $45, down from $73.48 under the previous contract.

Forging plants in Detroit and New York will close.
