The manager and two employees of a Bay City Lone Star Steakhouse & Saloon were fired after allegedly hanging a noose in view of a black cook. Police said a co-worker pointed out the noose to the cook, Joe Hill. The employees reportedly let the noose hang for four days before taking it down.

A representative for Wichita, Kan.-based Lone Star said the incident does not reflect the culture of the restaurant chain.

Police are investigating it as a hate crime.

You can’t always prevent unacceptable behavior. But once you become aware of it, a swift response can head off trouble. Lone Star gets a “well done” for acting quickly and decisively, and publicly denouncing the behavior.
