The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) has announced a 5% overall rate reduction in workers’ comp rates, the first reduction since 2001.

The decrease will take effect July 1. Rates for individual businesses will vary based on their particular risks. BWC spokesman Keary McCarty said claims have dropped as a result of the shift from manufacturing jobs to service jobs.

Ohio is one of only four states with a publicly managed workers’ compensation system.
