Police say Charles Johnston went to Doctors Hospital in Columbus on March 28 armed with guns stuffed into his coat and pants pockets, looking for nurse Peter Wright. He went to the fifth-floor intensive care unit. When he overheard someone call Wright’s name, Johnston followed him into a hospital room and allegedly shot Wright in the chest.

Johnston “held a grudge” against Wright, authorities said, because he felt Wright had not adequately cared for his mother when she was in the hospital’s ICU before her death in 2004.

Johnston allegedly also fatally shot an administrative assistant who crossed his path as he was leaving the hospital. He allegedly killed a third victim in the parking lot, where a plainclothes detective shot Johnston, wounding him.

Johnston had no documented history of mental illness and had a pistol permit.

Tip: While employers can’t guarantee their employees’ safety, tighter security might have made this crime harder to commit.
