Q. Some employees have complained anonymously that an employee is receiving preferential treatment because she’s the niece of a manager. We would like to defuse the situation by transferring her to another office. Is this OK?

A. Probably, provided you have taken similar action in any other instances like this one, if there have been any. Otherwise, the niece could claim she is being treated differently for some impermissible reason.

You also should investigate whether she has, in fact, received preferential treatment because of her family relationship. If she has, the manager who provided the preferential treatment should be counseled about it.
