Employers that knowingly hire illegal immigrants could lose their licenses under a bill approved by the Indiana House of Representatives in February. Some Republicans said the bill falls short because it does not prevent illegal immigrants from receiving public benefits.

Two versions of the proposal are moving through the House. The final result will no doubt be a compromise reached late in the legislative session.

Between 55,000 and 85,000 unauthorized immigrants live in Indiana, according to 2006 estimates by the Pew Hispanic Center. Both chambers of the General Assembly have expressed interest in targeting companies that profit from illegal immigration.
