Quicken Loans of Livonia ranked second in the nation on Fortune magazine’s 2008 list of “100 Best Companies to Work For.”

The magazine noted Quicken’s “ethically driven” culture, which allowed it to sail unscathed through the subprime mortgage crisis.

Two other Michigan employers also placed well: (1) Plante & Moran, the Southfield accounting firm, ranked 44th, earning praise for a company culture that promotes employee bonding; and (2) furniture pioneer Herman Miller, of Zeeland, came in 96th for valuing long-term employees.  At Herman Miller, 23% of employees are “water carriers,” employees with 20-plus years of service and charged with carrying the company culture forward.

Fortune considered such factors as job growth, pay, turnover, benefits, treatment of women and minorities, and culture in selecting the top employers of 2008.
