Former Ohio State University basketball coach Jim O’Brien is free to return to the sidelines after a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) appeals committee lifted all sanctions against him.

O’Brien was fired from OSU in 2004 over several charges of misconduct, including lending money to a recruit. He has since been locked in a battle with the NCAA to regain his coaching rights.

O’Brien won a wrongful-termination suit against the university for $2.2 million plus interest, which probably will cost the school close to $3 million. In February, the Ohio Supreme Court declined to hear the university’s appeal.

“The outcome of this case is disappointing news,” said OSU spokesman Jim Lynch. “Universities such as Ohio State hold themselves to the highest possible standards and take appropriate action after discovering NCAA violations.”
