The IRS last month posted a warning to taxpayers about e-mail and phone-based scams that falsely use the IRS’ name.

The goal: Trick you into giving up your Social Security number, credit card info and other key financial data. The method: Scammers pose as the IRS, saying they need your data to send you the promised stimulus-package tax rebate (recently signed by President Bush) or even audit information.

In reality, the IRS never sends unsolicited e-mail about personal tax matters.
