AT&T Corp. and BellSouth Corp., based in Atlanta, have been hit with a class-action unpaid wage and overtime lawsuit in U.S. District Court, Northern District.

The lawsuit seeks back wages for time worked before and after shifts and during meals and rest breaks on behalf of employees in call centers in several states. The lawsuit says sales and service employees routinely spent large amounts of time booting up computers, logging into computer systems and performing customer callbacks without compensation, in violation of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

It’s clear from this case that it doesn’t take much time spent off the clock to add up to a huge headache for employers. Protect your company with a written policy forbidding hourly employees to work off the clock—and enforce it.
