Q. When and how must I deliver a fired employee’s final paycheck?
A. In North Carolina, an employee shall be paid all wages due on or before the next regular payday. There is an exception for commissions and bonuses—they must be paid on the first regular payday after they become calculable.
You can deliver a final paycheck through regular pay channels or by mail if requested by the employee. In the event the employee asks you to mail the paycheck, regulations require you to get notarized or witnessed consent from the employee. Regular pay channels or mail are the only two options allowed by statute. A friend picking up the check is not acceptable.
