Robert Abene, president of Valdosta Technical College, resigned days after his son was arrested on charges of misusing a state-issued credit card. Abene said he was resigning to focus on his family.

The card’s misuse was revealed through an audit of state-issued credit cards ordered by Gov. Sonny Perdue after an audit found widespread abuse in seven state departments. The second audit found four university employees who made tens of thousands of dollars in personal charges on the state cards, including one for a diamond ring.

Tip: Corporate credit card abuse is all too common. When issuing corporate cards, always include a contract clearly outlining the terms of use and closely monitor all spending.
