On Oct. 3, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Missouri approved motions to allow the managers of Interstate Bakeries Corp. to go ahead with plans to close most of its Southern California operations.

Judge Jerry Venters, who is overseeing the company’s reorganization, ruled in Interstate’s favor on a motion to emerge from Chapter 11 protection by closing four bakeries. In September, Interstate Bakeries claimed in bankruptcy court filings that it had lost more than $10 million in the Southern California bread market in 2007 and that it expected its losses to continue for five more years.

Despite objections from the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, which represents the company’s employees, Interstate plans to close the bakeries and 30 related facilities, resulting in the loss of about 1,300 jobs.
