A Wayne County jury took just one hour to review three weeks of testimony before awarding $6.5 million to two former police officers who blew the whistle on corrupt city practices under Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.

The officers alleged they were fired for reporting rampant cronyism and corruption in the city, including overtime fraud, drinking on duty, unreported accidents in city cars, wild parties and late-night liaisons by the mayor.

The city could have settled the suit a month before trial for just over $2 million.

A Detroit woman who observed the trial said, “I don’t know why the city went to court on it because they didn’t have any defense.”
