The Michigan State Police fired a Lansing forensic scientist who tested her husband’s underwear for DNA to see if he was cheating. Asked during her divorce hearing what she found, the scientist said, “Another female. It wasn’t me.”
The scientist said she ran the test on her own time, using expired chemicals set to be discarded. Still, department policy forbids using state property for nonduty purposes, leaving the award-winning scientist without a husband or a job.
Final note: Does your company have a similar policy prohibiting using company property for personal use? If not, consider one. Otherwise, employees may end up “moonlighting” at your expense.
