Douglas Smith, local manager for Liberty Transportation in Perrysburg Township, foresaw trouble as he prepared to fire truck driver Calvin Findlay. Liberty, based in New Alexandria, PA, sent Thomas Lazar, an employee who was also a retired Pennsylvania state trooper, to help Smith, who worked alone.
That preparation was wise, but in vain. Findlay arrived at work on Aug. 9 and fatally shot both men. Police later found a cache of weapons at the motel where Findlay was staying, including a .308-caliber sniper rifle and an AK-47.
Final note: Smith judged correctly that Findlay was unstable, but unfortunately, that didn’t prevent violence. You may want to consult with your attorney and mental health experts for the best way to handle potentially explosive situations.
