SRA International Inc. in Fairfax, Va., provides an on-site RN whom employees and their families may visit or call with all kinds of medical and wellness issues.

SRA’s Nurse Advocacy Program launched more than 10 years ago—with one nurse—as a modest cost-containment strategy, helping employees manage complex medical situations. Today, the information technology services company has three RNs and an off-site medical director who provide routine and minor care for employees, as well as follow-up and preventive guidance.

Health staff salaries comprise the lion’s share of the program’s cost, says Kay Curling, director of work/life solutions. Incidental expenses, including liability insurance and equipment, add up to less than $175,000 a year.

The company recoups that—and more—in health care cost and productivity savings, not to mention employees’ appreciation.
