Poor taste can be expensive. That’s what a Fort Pierce deputy building official learned after losing his $88,000 job over a two-inch stuffed monkey that he presented at a retiring director’s going-away party.
The gift was a gag over an incident in which the director had called a black female code enforcement officer a monkey. A large group in the department had collaborated on the gift and received written warnings for their participation.
Tip: Workplace humor is fine until it drifts into gags about an employee’s gender, race, age or religion. Make that point clear to employees in policies and training, and discipline accordingly.
