Workplace abuse trickles down from the top

Supervisors engage in more abuse of their staffers when they believe the overall organization makes unfair decisions, according to a new study in Personnel Psychology.

When an organization doesn't seem fair in distributing pay, benefits or other incentives, the study says, bosses are more likely to become rude, assign blame and publicly ridicule those who report to them.

The study concludes that "organizations seeking to reduce hostility and aggression in the workplace may need to begin with the fair treatment of supervisors."
