If you're not doing so already, take steps to discourage employees and dependents from holding duplicate health coverage.

Example: Ford Motor Co. now requires employees to pay extra toward their health premiums if their covered spouses have duplicate health coverage at their own jobs or elsewhere.

Other companies encourage such double-covered spouses to get off their health plans by paying them an incentive bonus. Before doing so, make sure you obtain verification that the employee's spouse actually is covered elsewhere.
