Q. Is it OK not to pay hourly employees if we have to send them home because our computer system went down for the day? —J.B., Massachusetts

A. It is legal, but that doesn't mean we recommend it. Sending employees home because of circumstances beyond their control and not providing any pay could create a serious employee morale issue. Many employers choose to provide at least some compensation in that situation (such as a couple hours of pay or a flat sum).
