Q. I know we're allowed to tell employees which months they can't take vacations, but can we also require that vacations be taken only by the week, and not in daily, hourly or half-day increments? —P.A., Nebraska

A. No law requires employers to provide paid vacations of any kind. So, you have the flexibility to fashion a vacation policy that fits your business needs. That means you can require vacation be taken only during certain months or in certain increments. But yours is not really a legal question. It's really a question of employee recruitment, retention and morale. Would your employees rather work for a competitor who doesn't have such an unusual vacation policy?
