Smart companies draft policies that dictate appropriate use of company PCs, e-mail and phones. But more than 80 percent of companies fail to establish policies on handheld devices like PDAs. Employees increasingly connect their PDAs to company computers to take documents and contact lists on the road.

The problem: Since most PDAs have no security protection, hackers can gain access to your computer through the PDA. Plus, the devices also can transmit viruses.

One solution: Prohibit employees from connecting PDAs to company computers, except to synchronize their calendars or appointment schedules between the two. Put your policy in writing.
