The IRS is trying to find ways to steer more taxpayers to its Free File online tax preparation service wherein members of 20 tax software companies make their federal online tax filing service available at no charge for taxpayers with income below $54,000 ("IRS asks Intuit, others to expand Free File program,", 9/22/08). This request comes hot on the heels of a report from the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) recommending that the IRS find ways to be more aggressive in getting taxpayers to utilize this free tax filing service.
