in The Wrong Question

America's Got Talent is one of the top rated shows on TV this summer and I suspect a lot of people will tune in to see if he does win, but that's the wrong question.

Better Question:  Why do you like him so much?

At some level, business revolves around working with people we like.  Being likable is an important business asset.  Knowing this, I'm trying to identify why I like this chicken catcher so much and why his performance was so moving.

Was it song choice?

My expectations?

His mannerisms and accent?

His presentation and clothing?

A lot of the acts on this show seem staged and contrived, but Kevin Skinner seemed authentic.  Because of that, I want to learn and hear more, I wonder what is his thinking, what song he'll do next, if he'll advance to the next round?

He has my interest, affection and attention.  In a crowded world, that is very valuable.  I suspect AGT producers have already figured this out and fully expect he will reach the finals (remember, this is a business).

There is a valuable business lesson here, but I can put my finger on exactly why I like him so much, can you help…?

PS: He's a lock to reach the finals.

I think a big part of why Kevin is so well liked is that he seems to just be a simple man, what you see is what you get. Combine that with all the fighting going on around the world and the words in his audition song…”tell someone that love, just what you’re thinking of, if tomorrow never comes”, and you’ve got a hit. How could you not love him? These words specifically brought back memories to me of 9/11 and all those families that didn’t get a chance to tell their loved ones that they were loved before it was too late.

It’s that indescribable “it” that you always hear Simon Cowell talking about. It’s passion, it’s talent, it’s vulnerability … at it’s deepest level it’s the ability to effectively communicate with music. Whatever else it is, Kevin’s got it!

I agree, Doc. But, you’ve only seen him perform for a total of 5 minutes. What makes you instantly feel like he is genuine and honest…?

I think America loves Kevin because he is relatable, genuine, humble and honest. PLUS he’s loaded with talent, his singing is both heartwarming and heart wrenchingly beautiful.

While I agree with you, I wonder why you feel that way. Can you identify specifically what about him makes you “love him” and feel like he is the real deal. I’d love to get your thoughts…

I hope he wins. He is the “real deal”. I never vote in these contests…but I voted the max for Kevin….and will do so after every show. He is AMERICA. It’s so nice to see a breath of fresh air…nothing fake about this guy. Hope he can continue with great song choices…love him.

Agree. I never thought he was lecturing or preaching, just sharing his views with his music.

I have asked myself these same questions. What is it about him? I think I love him because he is “real” Nothing fake about this dude.
