We're looking for simple ways to boost morale as we weather the recession. I'd like to start an "employee of the month" recognition program. Who should choose the employee: co-workers or management? Does anyone have tips on making this program successful?--Steph, Cincy

We have our employees nominate their peers for exceptional service or going abive and beyond and then we pick a name from those nominees. Everyone who was nominated receives a certificate and the winner gets a small gift and $25 gift certificate.

It really doesn’t matter whether it is management or rank & file employees that make the choice. The main element is that a common denominator is used to evaluate the winner, mainly what is felt needs to be accomplished the most, and therefore the reward. A board with name mplaques should be used also so the rewrded employee can see their name recognized and on display. mIt must be done on time evry month with an apponited person to insure this happens, otherwise the recogntion process looses it’s impact. Reward what is expected and as always, inspect what you expect.

We have two awards, an employee of the month (nominated and voted on by our executives) and a Rowan winner (someone who has gone above and beyond their “job description” to help out someone or a situation – they get nominated by all employees and last month’s Rowan winner chooses this month’s Rowan winner). We have two “fun” cars (a Nissan Z and a Hummer H3) that each winner gets to drive for the month and they get a gas card for $150 for the fun cars. Talk about morale builders!
