Q. Due to budget problems, we plan to furlough our employees for one day per month. Some have asked whether they can collect partial unemployment comp. What should I tell them? — T.M., Ohio

A. Unemployment varies from state to state, but generally, state law does not provide for unemployment for employees furloughed on a day-by-day basis.

In Ohio, for example, your employees would only be entitled to unemployment if they were off work for an entire week. Thus, unemployment would cover weekly furloughs, but not daily furloughs. Employers should check the law in their states to see if daily furloughs are eligible for unemployment compensation.
