Q. How does the new health care reform law affect coverage for adult dependent children under a group health plan?

A. The law requires insured and self-insured group health plans that offer coverage for dependent children to make coverage available to a participant’s dependent child until the child turns 26 years old. It does not matter whether the child is married, resides with the participant or is financially dependent on the participant.

This rule is effective for plan years beginning on or after Sept. 23, 2010.
