Forbes magazine has just published its list of the best cities in the United States for working mothers. Florida fared poorly, largely because of low rankings for three of the state’s largest metro areas: Jacksonville, Miami-Fort Lauderdale and Orlando.

Among the factors contributing to the low rankings were high crime rates, growing unemployment and poor school funding.

Forbes rated cities nationwide on the basis of women’s pay, cost of living, crime rates, access to medical care and schools.

Final note: Reports such as this one may make it harder to recruit the best talent. Be prepared to counter the report with positive facts about your organization and town or city. Highlight things like good schools and low cost of living, as well as great weather and access to recreation.
