Question: “I work really hard, and I have a lot of responsibility with my job. I received a promotion not too long ago, but it came with only a very small pay increase. I feel that my responsibilities outweigh the pay increase. How do I ask for more money now?” — Anonymous

Make sure you have a list of your responsibilities and any new responsibilities that may have been added since your promotion. Do research by making a few phone calls to other companies to see what they pay for the same type of job duties. If you feel you are still underpaid, approach your supervisor with your findings and just say you feel you are still being paid 5% or whatever the percentage is, under what the going rate is.

Please check out an article I've posted on my website that addresses Salary Negotiation: http://www.speakyourtruth.com/article_display.php?Article=28
It should address your concerns and give you specific, effective phraseology.

A similar question was asked in the April newsletter. It had a lot of good responses.

You should have addressed this before accepting the position. Were you given an offer letter and list of the responsibilities? You should have done your homework prior to accepting the position.
