One of your best weapons, when it comes to persuading others, is an adaptable communication style.

Look out for these four styles of communicators, and adjust your approach when working with them:

Style 1: Fast and fearless. This person likes a fast pace, is good at rolling with problems and going on instinct.

Use these words: “We can make this happen today if we …” “The bottom line on this is …”

Style 2: Fun and creative.

Use these words: “You’ll win the XYZ prize for sure if you …” “Wow, this will be fun.”

Style 3: Step-by-step. This person values security and doesn’t like ambiguity.

Use these words: “Let’s take a few days and think this over before we decide.” “I promise I will …”

Style 4: Risk-averse. This person prefers a cautious approach.

Use these words: “The research shows that …” “This approach has a proven track record.”
