Henkel North America—the maker of Dial soap, Purex laundry detergent and Loctite adhesives—throws itself a big birthday party every year, inviting employees to participate in activities that don’t cost them or the organization much money.

Each Henkel site in North America celebrates the organization’s Sept. 25, 1876, founding with Henkel Day. This year’s festivities included a nod toward the firm’s German roots, with strudel, accordion players and beer stein contests, along with ice cream socials and online games with prizes.

In addition, some Henkel sites used the day to reach out to local charities. The management team at the Bridgewater, N.J., office, for example, washed employees’ cars to raise money for United Way, while others volunteered or held raffles for community organizations.
