People with autism would be among those protected by the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination (NJLAD) if measures introduced in the state Assembly and Senate pass. The bills would make it illegal to discriminate in employment because a person has autism.

New Jersey has the highest incidence of autism in the country with one out of every 94 children showing some symptoms of the condition.

Autism is a developmental disability that is thought to be genetically based. Autism varies widely in its severity, and many adults with autism can hold jobs.

Note: If passed, the NJLAD amendment would mean employers must treat autism like any other disability that an employee may have.

Autistic employees who can perform the job’s essential functions may not be discriminated against, and employers will be expected to engage in an interactive process to find appropriate reasonable accommodations.
