Setting high standards for yourself is good, but here’s how to monitor your level of expectations so you’ll be tough but fair:

  • Judge whether you’ve set reasonable standards for yourself and others, meaning you hit or exceed targets about 80% of the time.
  • Assess whether you’re beating yourself up about mistakes.
  • Ask others for their honest opinions of how critical you are, and compare their thoughts with your own view of the spectrum from reasonable to hypercritical.
  • What does all this imply about how you should change the way you apply standards?
