'No texting while driving,' Obama tells federal staff, as more states outlaw texting for all drivers

President Obama last month signed an executive order that directs federal employees “not to engage in text messaging while driving government-owned vehicles; when using electronic equipment supplied by the government while driving; or while driving privately owned vehicles when they’re on official government business.”

Obama’s order also “encourages” employers with government contracts and others doing business with the government to enforce their own texting-while-driving bans.

Nearly 20 states have passed their own texting-while-driving bans for all drivers. And about the same number have various laws against using cell phones while driving. For an updated chart of all state cell phone and texting laws, go to www.ghsa.org/html/stateinfo.
