The company I work for has been proactive about a pandemic situation since 2006 by requiring all employees to attend an hour long presentation about pandemic preparedness. This approach has helped tremendously by ensuring employees are kept informed and trained. Each department has at least 2 hand santizing dispensers and reminders have been going out via email very often reminding employees about proper hygien practices as well as a revised attendance policy and various other steps being taken by the company. The company also provides free flu shots to all of its employees, this has been an ongoing project ever since I can remember and I've been with the company 11 years.

I work in a medical clinic / hospital setting. We have Purell hand santizers everywhere you turn. We also have very large signs displayed at the entrances warning about the flu and precautions. You can do the same anywhere. I keep hand sanitizer on my desk and everyone that comes by uses it. I also keep one in my car and purse. They're easy and convenient. See if your employer will start purchasing cases of sanitizer and make up signs to post.

I work in the Hospitality industry and we are constantly reminding our employees of the importance of hand washing, etc. We have provided pocket sized hand sanitizers as well as have the units on the walls everywhere. We provide disinfecting wipes for all the offices and administative staff. That is an everyday thing here. As flu season approaches, we have posters throughout the employee areas with information. We also offer free flu shots to any employee willing to sign up for them. We have also posted all information on our internal website and our employee closed circuit TV. All of this had netted us great results over the last 4 years - we have not seen an increase in work disruption.

Our offices have Purell hand sanitizer dispensers accessible to customers and staff. Departments are given CDs monthly, to update on company activities, changes, etc., and one had information on swine flu. We also had information posted on the company's intranet to education the masses. In the next month or two we will also be able to schedule time thru our HR department to take flu shots, if we want. They bring medical staff into the office once a year for shots and health screening for those of us who want to take advantage of the convenience. It's one of the benefits the company pays for to help keep their employees healthy.

I distributed a memo to staff on how they can help reduce the spread of germs in the office, and posted flyers in all of the bathrooms reminding staff and guests to wash their hands frequently. Not sure if they appreciate the seriousness of this issue, but I did what I thought was right.

We reimburse up to $25 each for the cost of the normal flu shot, the swine flu shots, and the pneumonia shot. We have signs on the mirrors in the bathroom reminding everyone that guidelines say a person should wash hands long for the same length of time that it would take to sing the alphabet song (or for how long it takes to sing Happy Birthday twice). We remind everyone that we don't want them coming to work if they might be contagious. In fact, the only time that we will order an employee home, even if they insist on working, is if we think they are contagious.

I forgot to add, we also buy a 8-ounce hand sanitizer bottle for each person's desk or work area, and we have giant-sized ones out in more public areas. When someone goes home sick or calls in sick, a small army of people (it seems) attacks that person's work area with disinfectant wipes and sprays. We remind everyone to sneeze into their arm, not their hands.

Not only do we have Purell everywhere, we also have Clorox sanitizing wipes and Lysol available for everyone to use. Our HR department sent out information in regards to the flu season and we have signs throughout the office reminding employees to wash their hands, sneeze/cough into a tissue/sleeve, etc.

It really comes down to common sense.

We remind employees that they should be aware of the flu season, by how to properly wash hands, etc. We however are a medical facility so we are all pretty trained and required to have a very clean facility. We have always offered the flu shot to all employees at no charge, on a voluntary basis. For this flu season we are also offering the 2 dose H1N1 but only in shot form vs the nasal spray.

My office is at a university, and HR has sent many emails regarding the flu, sanitation tips, etc. We recently had a flu shot clinic and had to pay only a nominal fee for the shot. We will have another clinic when the H1N1 vaccine is available. In our office, we have both a soap dispenser and hand sanitizer in the kitchen area. We encourage people to stay home when sick, although they don't always comply.

Our IT department has made sure that everyone has remote access so they can work from home if need be. We also have a system that if we have to close our offices, the switchboard can be transferred. There are hand sanitizers at every desk and in all the common areas. There are also clorox wipes at every desk. The front desk is a shared space, and it must be wiped down completely after each person uses it. (phone, keyboard, mouse etc..). Our building manager comes through twice a day and wipes down all door handles, and light switches. There is also a container of small sanitizers in both our kitchen and front desk for visitors.

Is your company changing its attendance policy in anticipation of a robust flu season?
