About a third of the 15 employees who work for ClearedJobs.net in Falls Church, Va., bring their dogs to work. So it was pretty easy for Chief Marketing Officer Kathleen Smith to convince the group to pitch in when she decided to send care packages to U.S. military working dogs in Afghanistan.
The organization, a job board for people with security clearances, has been sending care packages to human members of the military for years. After Smith set up a Twitter account for her own dog, Oso, she learned from a “tweet” about the military hounds and decided to include them in the firm’s charity work.
Employees participate voluntarily, both on and off the job. The group packed up enough rawhide bones, toys and dog treats for 10 dogs and sent them to the war zone.
“It helps employees get together and do something for others,” says Smith, whose dog has more than 600 Twitter followers (www.twitter.com/SpecialAgentOso). “It helps us go beyond office politics … and shows everyone is a caring and compassionate person.”
