Question: “My boss is inundated with business cards, some in Rolodexes, others loose…but he doesn’t want to weed through and toss old ones. Any ideas on how to organize them?” — Anonymous
Question: “I am the executive assistant to three partners. Typically, I can handle the ‘I’m the boss, you’re the worker’ mentality here, but there are times when it really gets to be too much ego for one admin to handle. The company is predominantly male employees. The company buys tickets to local sports events, but the women are never invited.
"How do I make the main boss realize that the women in this company do actually contribute to the success of the company and deserve to be included in the extracurricular rewards?  And how do I help him realize that a simple thank-you goes a long way.  His theory is 'my thank you is your paycheck every week.'  He also states at every holiday that 'S**t rolls downhill, gifts roll up.'
"I love working for this company, but clearly how they view the women in this office is very difficult to handle with a polite/professional attitude.” — Anonymous

Question: “Occasionally, when I need to get input quickly from another administrative assistant (same rank and file), she refuses to respond. This is frustrating, especially when my boss has asked me to set up a meeting, and the assistant to the key person won’t respond. I don’t want to take the issue to management, but I do want to know how to professionally handle this so we can effectively work together.” — Another Brick in the Wall

Question: “I assist a director who supervises several managers as well as me. We have a very good relationship. Recently, however, he asked me to delegate administration and data system tasks and only follow up to ensure everything is done properly. He wants me to be available more when needed and to tidy up the office. I would like to find out why he is changing my duties, but I don’t know how to ask. He does not like people to ask. I have heard rumors as to why he's doing this to me, but I would like to ask him directly.”  — Unhappy admin

Question: “We have tasks assigned to us via e-mail, the phone, in-person, in passing, etc. How do you keep your assignments organized? I carry my notebook and keep it on my desk to jot down assignments and then transfer some tasks to Outlook, but I’m wondering if there is a better, more efficient way to keep track of everything. Do you rely on your memory, written lists, Outlook, Excel spreadsheets, etc.? What are your secrets to staying organized and on top of all your assignments? — Linda

Question: “Our organization has held systemwide support staff meetings that are usually topic specific.  We have undergone an organizational restructuring and the person who was in charge of these admin meetings is now gone.  Attendance at these meetings has been poor and the topics don't seem to relate to everyone.  We want to restructure these meetings. Does anyone have systemwide support staff meetings?  If so, what's your format?  What are the topics?  What do you find the most valuable?  How does the support staff respond to these meetings?” — Anonymous
