Movers who work for All My Sons Moving & Storage used to show up for their shifts not knowing if there would be any work for them that day. Now they can check online to learn if they need to make the trip to the Farmers Branch, Texas, headquarters to pick up a truck.
Still, many of the organization’s 3,000 full- and part-time movers don’t use the Internet, so the new schedule isn’t as effective as managers had hoped.
So CFO Ormando Gomez decided to try to recruit more Internet-savvy movers—by using the Internet to recruit them.
Now, would-be new hires apply through ads they find on craigslist, Monster.com and other sites. The organization’s help-wanted ads are linked to a new career site that lists the firm’s openings for drivers, sales estimators, dispatchers, claims adjusters and customer service reps.
“We’re recruiting a higher caliber of employee—someone who understands the Internet, so we know they’ll be able to use scheduling boards,” says Gomez.
Employees also can view ratings posted for them by customers, which managers use to decide which movers get the best jobs. “Now, they’re saying to us, ‘What do I have to do to get my scores up?’ They’re working for their tips and for the rating.”
