While you may not have been partying much at the office lately, some employers see summer as an ideal time for an all-staff get-together. Instead of spending a lot on flowers and glassware rentals, though, they’re getting creative with summertime themes.
Here are ideas assistants posted on the Admin Pro Forum:
$ One company enjoys traditional games at its annual potluck picnic. Jackeline writes that when you win the water balloon fight, wheelbarrow race, horseshoe game or three-legged race, you win a medal—a used CD with a ribbon laced through the hole.
Costs stay down because employees bring food to share. The one splurge: They rent a dunking booth, and one of the bosses sits on the hot seat.
$$ Tara’s company took over a large field and outdoor basketball court to set up a carnival, complete with a DJ, popcorn, rented bounce-house for kids and a cotton candy machine.
$$ Barb’s company rents space at a local park for its annual summer picnic. Rather than a potluck, though, they have the event catered with simple picnic fare (hot dogs, baked beans, potato salad, etc.). Other expenses: renting an inflatable jousting ring and hiring a face painter, “which the kids loved,” she writes.
$$$ Mimi’s firm rented out the local zoo for an after-hours party. They booked a live animal show and petting zoo for staff. Because the zoo didn’t allow any outside food into the park, Mimi worked with the zoo’s caterers to provide food.
“We went with the safari theme and got pith helmets and some other little toys for the kids,” she says.
$$$ Though Sharilyn’s company has several parties for employees during the year, its summer pool party with a catered dinner is perhaps the favorite. They rent the pool at a local country club, and employees spend time swimming and outdoing each other in poolside contests.
Before the party, Sharilyn stocks up on inflatable toys at the dollar store for kids to play with and then take home.
