The Internet is changing the way we read and think, asserts a recent article in The Atlantic Monthly titled “Is Google Making Us Stupid?”
The Internet has shortened our attention span, it says, so we’re far less likely to read and contemplate lengthy articles. Instead, we scan, jumping around to gather information.
So, what does that mean for admins? Cater your writing to the skimmers of the world.
Here are a few tips:
- Format your document so it’s easy on the eyes. Use plenty of white space by keeping paragraphs short.
- Use bullets. No one wants to absorb a lengthy, stream-of-consciousness document when a few bullets would do the trick.
- Strategically set words in boldface or underline, so the fastest skimmers can know instantly what’s most important.
- Choose an easy-to-read serif typeface, such as Times Roman.
