The IRS recently issued a warning, reminding employers that they remain responsible for paying payroll taxes on time, even if their outsourcing partner fails to do its part.
Example: A New Jersey doctor’s office tried to avoid paying penalties and interest on unpaid taxes, noting that its payroll provider embezzled the tax payments. But the IRS said reliance on a payroll service (even a crooked one) isn’t “reasonable cause” for failing to pay tax.
