Rather than criticize a colleague to his boss, say, “Please let me know if you’d like my input on how the project’s going.” That way, you can couch your criticism in a broader assessment. Example: “Overall, the project’s going well, although Chris has struggled a bit.” Don’t elaborate unless the boss asks.
