By sharpening your thinking skills, you can climb faster. Try exercising your brain in new ways—and let your bosses know what you’re up to. They may not only admire your efforts, but they may want to follow your lead. Examples:

  • Improve your quantitative skills by learning to use an abacus, balancing your checkbook in your head rather than with a calculator, or playing math games such as dominoes.
  • Build your vocabulary by reading a page a day from the dictionary or taking a Latin class.
  • Sharpen your memory by learning to recite poems or song lyrics by heart or using visual associations to recall the names of new acquaintances.
