Don’t rush to blame office politics

Q: My wife was a victim of vicious politics at her company. She wasn’t promoted, even though she was obviously the most qualified choice. I keep telling her to quit. Please help me convince her!

A: How do you know for sure that she should have gotten that promotion? There are dozens of reasons why people don’t get the jobs they covet. Examples include mismatched personalities, lack of technical expertise and poor timing. Maybe her bosses have other, more exciting plans for her that allow her to skip this promotion and rise even faster later. Before you attach the “office politics” label, analyze whether you’re simply casting about for an easy, comforting explanation.
